April Festivities: Catching Up (Photo Overload)

It’s FINALLY spring! The “polar vortex” is over (don’t toy with me, Mother Nature…let's keep some springy weather around and let the summatime heat waves come in late June), flowers are blooming and the grass is greening up. While my allergies are in full swing (a pharmacist told me that this is the year of the “allergy vortex”…good grief), I am opening up my windows and soaking up all this beautiful weather with a Kleenex in my pocket and a solid stock of Dayquill in my bathroom cabinet. After all that snow and ice and bone-chilling cold, I’ll sneeze on my daffodils and let my eyes water as I lounge on my front porch and inhale deep, refreshing breaths of pollen and cat hair. Spring has sprung! I couldn’t be happier about it. And with this lovely weather comes a few springy events. (Note: this was written a few days weeks ago, so....bear with me as we recap a season that's pretty much come and gone.)

Several Saturdays ago, my Daddy-o and I put on our finest and headed out to the Down Syndrome Guild Prom. This year’s theme was “Bright Lights, Big City,” and was it a night to remember! I loved seeing all the attendees come in, walk down the red carpet in their prom gear and dance the night away. This is such a fun night for all who attend, either to help out or just to have a good time, and it makes me so happy that I was in town this year and was able to join in the festivities. (See last year’s celebrations here.)
{These two cuties showed up again this year--two girls I used to coach, Katrina and Lexi.}

On Easter Sunday, my parents hosted a delectable lunch and we were able to celebrate with some good ol’ fashioned family time together. (And PEEPS! I ate three packages the week after Easter. That’s a lotttt of Peeps.) Nova is almost 18 months, and is too cute for words. She is mimicking anything and everything you say, and has such a big personality. I can’t get enough of this little boo-boo!

My friend Kelli, who I used to work with at school, got married at the end of April. Her wedding was beautiful and she was a stunning bride. It was such a fun, springy night (and the dress I ordered the week of showed up the day before, so there ya go). Congrats, Chris and Kelli!
{Guy friends are great when you need a date.}

{With the beautiful bride! (And Josh, photobombing.)}

{Coral is the color!}
And finally, althought this was in May, my gorgeous and sweet cousin Caitlin graduated from high school last weekend. We made the trek up to Nebraska to wish her congratulations. It's hard to believe she is already old enough to be heading off to college. (I mean, I used to change the girl's diapers, and now, she's 18?! Craziness!!)

{My Aunt Chel, Caitlin, my mom and me...just four blondes, hanging out}

And now! It's the end of May and we're heading into the official Summer Season. This weekend, I have a birthday to celebrate and some pool days to squeeze in. Happy Summer, everyone!

Rain, Rain...

{Rainy Day}
Wouldn’t ya know, as soon as I started typing this post, the sun decided to make an appearance through the clouds. So much for my cries of desperation and woe: “when will this rainy streak of weather stop?!” And poof! Looks like my wish was granted. I was going to (very dramatically) announce that the only way I could enjoy the rain would be if someone gifted me a pair of these:
{Coral Hunter Boots! Swoon!}
...and then I was going to show you all the cute ways I would wear them:

{Pink Hunters}

{Bubblegum boots and mint skinnies}

{Shades of pink}

{Stripes and boots}
(I would obviously need a pair of those green Hunters in addition to the coral.)

{I love EVERYTHING about this outfit.}

But now the sun is out. Hooray! Although, I prob wouldn’t mind a few rainy days if I could rock the wellies...

Signs of Spring

While it doesn’t really feel like it today (40’s?? What??), spring has been popping up all over the place around town. Here are a few (totally random) signs of spring around my ‘hood.

{Yes, my eyes are closed. Of course. But Nova's are open!}
Swingin’! A few weekends ago, Drewby brought Nova over to my parents' house for some Scanlon-time with the babe. It was nice enough to head out on the porch and get some quality swing action in. She is such a doll. Couldn’t get enough of her sweet smiles and laughs.

{I like your hair, Auntie M. I'm going to pull on it for a while.}

Do I look relaxed in these pics? I certainly felt like it—usually, Sundays are kind of my “ughhhhhh” day. I know I have to be thinking about work the next day, and what I’m doing in my classes, and the grading…oh, the grading…it just never stops.

BUT!

I was totally relaxed on this particular Sunday because I had taken the following Monday off for…Opening Day at Kauffman! Hooray!

I went with a super-duper fun group of girls (plus about 50 million others, packed on the party bus) out to the K and we had ourselves a very fun day. And the Royals pulled out a W! (Never mind that we were back on the bus, because they didn’t pull ahead until the very end of the game, and let’s be honest, they stop serving beer during the 8th inning, and we had some tailgate priorities in mind. But hey—way to go, team!)

{With Megs}

{Check out our stellar seats. Ha! Yep, we were out in the fountains. We thought they were just fine seats, though, considering we had only bought "standing room only" tickets. Yes. This game was sold out. My ticket was a whopping $60 on Stubhub, for Pete's sake! But, totally worth it.}

{Cowboy boots. And SHORTS! It was a very good day.}
Okay, a few more signs of spring…here’s my token picture to prove that my yard is not always overgrown and unkempt.

I meant to take a few more pics of the lovely flowers that someone (definitely not me) had planted before I moved in, but the recent wave of thunderstorms has pretty much pounded my poor perennials into the dirt. And speaking of all of the rain, here’s a random shot:

{Please note the rust, decay, corrosion, and BROKEN-NESS of these specimens.}
This may not be a sign of spring, but I had to document this painful event somewhere. For about oh, I don’t know, the last two years or so, every six weeks, my toilet won’t flush. Apparently, tree roots had grown into the (originally-laid) pipes, and (AND!) they had cracked and filled with mud. Well duh, of course they weren't working! So finally, after several long days filled with visits to Starbucks and Target and Panera and Chipotle and maybe a different Target and wherever else I could loiter without suspicion, I finally have a working toilet. So thanks, guys who crawled under my house and replaced those rusty things. I really do appreciate you. And thanks, rental company who owns my house, for finally listening to my complaints and actually sending a plumbing company out to do something other than "clean the pipes." Much obliged.

And, so we’re not ending on talk of toilets—here’s a pic from my Mama's birthday celebration a couple nights ago, and just for kicks, one of Nova again, basking in the sunshine. Does it not bring a smile to your face? Oh spring, please stick around for good soon! I need some warm weather and sunshine in my soul!

{Love you, Mom!}

Happy March!

It’s finally March! And it’s snowing…it's coming down lightly, but it's still snowing. Sigh. Here’s hoping…

Minty Fresh

I’m kind of having a mint moment over here. These images from Pinterest have sparked some wardrobe inspiration. My quest? More mint!

{Sheer mint blouse}
{Love love love the pleats!}

{Topping this pretty dress with a peach blazer is so springy.}

Can you tell I'm craving a pair of mint skinnies? Haven't found quite the right pair just yet, but these are all fab looks...

{Mint skinnies with stripes}

{Mint skinnies with pointy metal-toed flats (SO in right now!)}

Lilac Love

{The defining scent of springtime}

***************************

On a perfectly calm, 75 degree evening last week, I had some time to myself and decided to take a walk through my neighborhood. It was a lovely night—people were out mowing lawns, walking their dogs, or taking leisurely strolls through the tree-lined streets. As I’ve mentioned before (here), my neighborhood is so charming. Every house is a little bit different from the next. As I turned a corner a few streets down from my own, the ultimate smell of springy weather hit my nose: a lilac bush. The sweet scent made me smile, and in my recent Pinterest sessions, I’ve taken notice of the lovely soft shade of purple. I’ve definitely got to find a few pieces to mix into my spring wardrobe.
